The purpose of an author website is pretty straight forward. The main purpose is to send readers to your website to get a free book, or any interesting freebie, in exchange for their email address.

If you attract readers that like your books, they’ll want to know about new releases, local events, behind the scenes information, and anything else you want to share with them. But, you can’t connect with them over the years if you don’t have their email address. Email is still the best way to keep in touch with readers.

Social media is a great platform to communicate with readers, but social networks have restrictive terms of service and they have been known to go out of business. Use social media platforms to connect with readers, if that’s your thing, and send them back to your website to collect their email address.

The layout of the website needs an email form to collect emails, your books and descriptions, what’s coming in the near future, any social media links, and some basic information about you. You don’t need a blog. If you want one, go for it. Otherwise, keep it simple. Keep it clean so people can find what they’re looking for. Don’t clutter ti up with junk that readers don’t want to see. And, make sure visitors know that you share special news with people that join your email list.

Web Hosting

While there are free hosting options available, you have more control and flexibility when you pay for professional hosting.

If you want a detailed explanation of web hosting options, read this article. Otherwise, I recommend Siteground (affiliate link). It’s what I use, it’s reasonably priced, and it’s been great for me.

Domain Name

Your domain name is how people find you online. As an author, you probably want to keep it simple – your name, or your name followed by author, writer, or books, depending on what’s available.

Don’t use dashes. Get .com. Keep it simple. You can get a free domain if you sign up for hosting with Siteground. Otherwise, I recommend Namecheap (affiliate link). They have good prices and an easy admin system.

WordPress Theme

WordPress is a platform to help you build a website and manage your content. It makes it relatively easy to build an effective, professional website.

You can change the look and feel of your website by using different WordPress themes. I’ve tried a billion different themes and I’ve used X Theme way more than any other theme. Check out X Theme on Themeforest (affiliate link). They have great support and a ton of valuable features.

If you want to build an awesome website on WordPress, I suggest you use OceanWP theme, in combination with Elementor Plugin. They’re both free. They both have a paid pro version, if you want the additional features. This website was created with both.

Convertkit is great for email marketing. You definitely want to collect your reader’s email addresses so you can stay in touch with them and let them know when you exciting things happen. If you’re not ready to pay for an email service yet, use Mailchimp. Mailchimp is free until you have 2,000 subscribers.

I’m working on creating free page templates with Elementor. If you’re interested, signup below and I’ll keep you posted.
